“. . . . For I am a sojourner with You, a guest, like all my fathers” (Psalm 39:12b).

A guest receives what is given with gratitude –

in a posture of humility and graciousness, far from demanding.

A guest travels lightly, knowing the stay is temporary.

A guest understands luxurious comfort is not the ultimate goal here.

No doubt, to sign the guest book and stay a while is a gift – yet it is to be received and redeemed, not squandered and wasted.

There is a purpose in this visit that requires wisdom – perception to see through occasional illusions and discipline to avoid constant distractions.

KNOW GOD. MAKE HIM KNOWN is scripted in large letters, framed and displayed on an empty wall of this guest house, with the exception of the westward-facing window over which it hangs. To serve as a reminder of the purpose for which one came and – with each sunset – to highlight the horizon for which one hopes.

In the meantime, the fragrance of the knowledge of Him (2 Corinthians 2:14) should fill every corner and crevice of this temporary dwelling; the knowledge of the measure of these fleeting days should dictate and direct each breath breathed among these shadows (Psalm 39:4-7); and His statutes should be the songs that resound throughout the entirety of this sojourning house (Psalm 119:54).

Oh, the contentment of a guest! With full permission granted to rest; freedom from possessiveness and entitlement; far less easily offended and deflated by any undesirable details of the visit . . .

especially when knowing an Eternal Home is just around the corner,

and a Merciful Father awaits to welcome . . .

and while even still a way off, He will run and embrace this temporary guest – this Forever child – with compassion and a kiss (Luke 15:20).
