Sometimes the Lord closes the door on something –
a good thing, perhaps a beautiful thing, maybe a thing we loved very much or held very dear –
and He opens the door to another something . . . something far more than we could have conjured up and surprisingly more than we could have ever imagined.
But when the new door first opens, sometimes it is dark. Sometimes it is dark for a while.
We cannot see where we are going, but we know how to walk.
By God’s grace, we have been taught how to walk as far back as we have memory.
Though it is harder to see, it is easier to hear.
“Listen carefully to ME…” (Isaiah 55:2)
“You need only to be silent.” (Exodus 14:14)
So, slowly, quietly, linearly we move, one foot in front of the other.
“Forward is the pace.”
We ache, and we grow.
Truths we have known in our heads sink deeply into the soles of our feet –
into the souls of our frailty.
And we keep moving,
learning to trust the Omnipotent hand of God.
To trust His Abba heart.
To trust His working and wisdom,
His goodness and timing.
We learn to undoubtedly trust Him –
the Maker of the doors,
the Keeper of the keys (Revelation 3:7),
the Author of the story,
the King and Creator of the cosmos,
the Ruler of the universe.
And this One who holds all things, has authority over all things,
is nearer to us than our very breath –
steadily, surely illuminating our path by His living Word, breathed out by His unfailing love,
and leading us by His Holy Spirit that incomprehensibly dwells within us.
God with us. God in us.
“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:17
Oh, Maker of the doors,
Wise Keeper of the keys –
Keep me always trusting You,
Moving forward, on my knees.
